Why Xylitol Should be IN and Sugar OUT (of your cart)

xylitol

You probably overlook that one small tablespoon of sugar you put in your morning coffee, then that other one you put in your afternoon tea, then the sugar you consume through pastries because hey, that’s not raw sugar right? And when you do your math, it comes out that you’ve had only one large spoon of sugar today, and that’s way to little to be harmful. Well, newsflash: it’s more than enough to cause some serious trouble in your system.

I’m sure you’ve heard this thousands of times – white refined sugar is the quietest, most deadly health detriment in the modern world. So those constant appeals to change white sugar with alternatives like xylitol sugar or stevia are not just commercial tricks to sell; they’re one sincere advice from medical professionals to the wide sugar-craving public.

White refined sugar damages your teeth, so if you eventually end up visiting the dentist every month or so, you’ll know why. If this is not reason enough to put the finger on your forehead, than the fact that your liver as a transporter of sugar, literally cries when sugar comes into it, definitely should, because you can get new teeth (maybe even better than your own) but a new liver? I don’t think so. And not to mention the disturbance in your overall metabolism by increasing LDL and decreasing HDL, hormone imbalance and severe increase of uric acid levels accompanied by very often and pretty uncomfortable visits to the toilet.

No, don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying you should make piece with the bitter coffee you so much hate. On the contrary, from the point of view of the hedonist I am, if sweet, hot coffee in the morning is what makes you start the day fresh and energized, you should enjoy it as much as possible. But, with xylitol sugar instead of white refined. Throw that garbage now and read on for the golden perks xylitol brings to us:

  • One of the biggest problems white refined sugar causes is the increase of blood sugar levels, which leads to increased insulin. Increased insulin leads to hormone imbalance and other disturbances in the body, or bottom line: causes a deteriorating storm in your system. Xylitol sugar contains only 0 fructose, therefore negligible effects on blood sugar and insulin. Also, the glycemic index of xylitol is 7, compared to white sugar’s which is 60-70.
  • Remember your teeth? Well, with xylitol, they won’t suffer. Oral bacteria, that causes the damage in the first place, feeds on the glucose in the food you eat. Using xylitol reduces that process significantly because when stacked with xylitol, bacteria can’t feed itself continuously and eventually starves to death.
  • One interesting fact that still needs to be tested is that xylitol can enhance the production of collagen, therefore, slowing the ageing process. Also, it is believed that it can prevent osteoporosis by adding more bone volume. This is still only a theory, but it may soon become an appealing reality. How cool is that? If scientists can prove these theories, then xylitol will become something close to a youth elixir.

Bottom line is, white refined sugar is the worst thing you can do to your health. Even if you’re so into healthy lifestyle with salads, fruits and veggies, no processed food, no artificial drinks, no alcohol and no cigarettes, sugar is still silently going to damage all of the above. So do the smart thing and get the alternative – it costs so little and it offers so much.
