1. It all starts with cutting the canvas. It is preferable that you cut 2.5 meters of canvas so that both children and adults can fit in and enjoy. Cutting along the longer edges is the right way to do if you are looking to create a deeper chair, whereas for a wider one, you will need to cut along the short side.
2. Next, you need to fold the canvas and start cutting from a point of 20cm towards left, starting from the right. You can draw a diagonal line all the way to the right corner on the bottom and then start cutting.
3. Hemming each edge of the fabric is a must. Iron after each fold, pin, stitch and hem. The diagonal edges should be hemmed only once.
4. Next step is creating pockets that will be secure enough to hold the weight of an adult. You can achieve this by folding 4cm backwards on every hemmed, diagonally positioned edge. Since this is the place where the rope will be passing through, add additional stitches at the beginning and at the end of the pocket in order to increase the strength and stability.
5. Once the basics of the canvas preparation are done, you can let your imagination guide you through the project. Moreover, feel free to personalize the look of your new hammock chair by using fabric paint and a brush.
6. The next step is to drill four holes through the oak dowel, precisely 2 holes at each end of the dowel.
7. Threading the rope is the next thing you need to do. There are various ways in which this can be done, just make sure that you secure the rope well as it passes through the holes of the dowel and the pockets. Tie the ends into safe knots.
Having done all of the above steps, all you need to do is hang the chair or the hammock swing in your room or garden. However, if time is a scarce commodity for you and you do not consider yourself a DIY person, you can simply buy a hammock swing or a chair either online or at a local store and save yourself headaches.
